German-born
physicist who researched quantum mechanics
Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) was a German physicist. He studied at Munich University
under the founder of quantum mechanics Niels Bohr, who soon recognized Heisenberg's
talents. Bohr took Heisenberg with him to the Institute of Theoretical Physics
in Copenhagen. At the time, such scientific luminaries as Paul Dirac, Wolfgang
Pauli and Yoshio Nishino were studying there. The group was referred to as the
Copenhagen Gang and their beliefs on quantum physics became known as the Copenhagen
Solution.
Heisenberg
completed his uncertainty principle
while still in his 20s
In 1927, Heisenberg used his uncertainty principle to create a matrix theory
that allowed for the movement and mass of microscopic objects to be calculated.
Once his theory had been confirmed, it offered great momentum to the field of
quantum mechanics. When Heisenberg completed his uncertainty principle he was
a mere 26 years old.
